Place any remaining loose rocks throughout your meditation space along with other natural elements such as sticks and dead leaves from nearby trees. Place smaller stones around larger ones representing mountains as focal points, adding smooth river rocks as stepping stones around these focal areas. Add sand over the top of this to fill in the lines between the tiles, creating a nearly even ground cover for visitors. Use a small rake or broom to draw a simple grid pattern using mulch or rocks, depending upon which you have access to, on your flat surface. You can also incorporate a kare Sansui garden to represent the rivers and streams of Zen thought. Gather fallen sticks from nearby trees and lay them across the ground for visitors to walk over.
Create a small waterfall using a pump and tubing from your local home improvement store, and place rocks of various sizes around it for seating.Īdd small seating areas with smooth river stones to serve as side tables next to larger rocks that can double as benches. Incorporate natural elements into your meditation area by creating a rock garden, pond with koi fish, bonsai tree display, etc. Place a candle in front of the zafu(s) to represent Buddha and turn off any nearby lights so that people have a dimly lit space in which to meditate. Place your zafu(s) in front of you and either sit on them cross-legged or kneel facing them with your hands resting in your lap or on your thighs, palms up. Sweep away any leaves, sticks, or other debris from the space before laying down tatami-style straw mats on which people can sit cross-legged on their zafus (round cushions), seiza (rectangular cushions), or kneel on their knees on Hanten (folded fabric). Use loose rocks to create small paths between larger rocks for visitors to walk upon.
You can recreate the look and feel of meditation spaces like those at many temples around the world with a few simple materials that you probably already have, or can easily obtain.
